The South Korean women’s curling team – who all share the same surname “Kim” and have been nicknamed the “Garlic Girls” because the team’s top players all come from Uiseong, North Gyeongsang Province – advanced to the gold medal game after a thrilling 8-7 victory over Japan at the Gangneung Curling Center on Feb. 23. The team avenged an earlier loss against Japan, who had been the only team to beat them thus far in Olympic play. The South Korean team, which has never medaled in Olympic competition, will face Sweden on Feb. 25, the final day of the Pyeongchang Olympics. Following the win against Japan, skip Kim Eun-jung saluted the crowd for its support.
